What a fabulous weekend! I had the privilege of working with the indigenous local artists from the Yuat people to create a 20-metre-long mural for the Moora Speedway. The speedway originally shared the land with an aboriginal mission until the late 70s. I was truly moved by the emotion from indigenous artist, Cheryl Chipper who expressed how touched her and her people were to have been invited to take part in such a huge project that acknowledges the history of the Yuat people.
I grew up in a speedway family and have such fond memories of the way the original grounds used to be, the little pathways that led up the hills to the mission houses, the smoke trails filtering into a star-studded sky from little campfires, and the air filled with swirls of dust and roaring motors from the car racing circuit.
The hardest part for me as an artist was to keep in a style that would fit in with all the other artworks, but I am so happy with the final result. Just magical.
